Discover: Nike is changing its Saturday launch time to 10 AM EST

If you are a passionate sneaker enthusiast, you have probably camped out of a store at least once to get that brand new Jordans, Nikes or some sort of collaboration between two or more brands. Nike has announced this afternoon that their Saturday releases will now launch at 10 AM EST/ 7 AM PST instead of 8 AM EST/5 AM PST. Nike has not stated any reason for this move and no words on what other sneaker carriers like Footlocker will do.

I honestly don’t believe that this will make any huge differences because those who really wish to get hands on a new pair of shoes are going to camp out of the store the night before its release anyway. I’ve seen people forming lines in front of Finish Line as early as 11PM. What these young adults do for a new pair of Jordans is pretty absurd. Just this past weekend, limited edition of Air Jordan 11 “Legend Blues” were released and a 16-year old boy was killed while attempting to rob two men who were lucky enough to purchase the shoes. It’s fascinating to see what kind of legacy Michael Jordan has besides the 6 rings (two three-peats), 6 Finals MVPs, 5 Regular Season MVPs, no look free throw, and other countless accomplishments. But it’s also really sad to see because at the end of the day, it was over a pair of shoes.

And that’s what I want to focus on this post — how much do these shoes ACTUALLY cost? I did some research but no one is sharing the actual number and for obvious reasons. The closest thing I got was this picture of Air Jordan 1 retro. Even after the labor cost, the shoes are worth just over $16. According to Charlotte Business Journals, Nike sold all 342,015 pairs of “Legend Blues” within three hours of release and the average cost was $179.80 a pair. That’s a pretty huge gap if you ask me. And $180 certainly is not enough to risk your life trying to rob. I read somewhere that we live in a “world of luxury goods” where the selling price is not determined by the cost of the goods, but by the status that buyers think they confer.

I have nothing against these people who go overboard trying to get hands on these shoes for 10 times their actual worth. If they make you genuinely happy, I say go out there and camp out before anyone else does. I also understand the cultural aspects of sneaker game. Rap and sneakers have always shared a special bond. In fact, I own a pair of Jordan 5 “Metallic” myself and I love them. However I think it’s extremely important that you are aware of what you are purchasing. Don’t buy into all these “hype” and own the products you purchase. Don’t let them own you.

In the midst of “beef” between Iggy Azalea and everyone in the world about how she “stole” Hip-Hop and she made it easy because she is white blah blah blah, I came across a news that will make everyone’s day: Hip-Hop Hall of Fame is coming to Harlem and Midtown Manhattan! They are scheduled to open sometime between 2015 and 2017 and they are also bringing back their annual Hip-Hop Hall of Fame Awards which was banned in 1997.

I think this is overdue considering how impactful the culture has been for more than three decades now. You see? Kendrick Lamar unleashed a new “untitled” song featuring Bilal (vocal), Thundercat(guitar) and Terrace Martin(saxophone) last night on The Cobert Report.
